Looking at the body of Lori Braun's work, you will quickly see that she has a soft spot for "Lakers". This splendidly selected and cut "shield" shaped Lake Superior agate has all of the desirable characteristics of a Lake Superior agate, plus a lovely hidden heart. The heart is located on the upper left. It is a solid iron red heart form surrounded by a quartz layer, which at times looks translucent and at other angles creates a dark outline, accentuating the heart shape. Lori celebrates the unusual heart occurrence by cutting a heart out of the back of the sterling silver directly behind it. The tell-tale lines of the agate flow around the heart, like a boulder in fast waters, they part, but here, captured in stone. The iron rich, autumn reds are separated with thin waves of earthy yarrow yellow.
A simple, yet substantial bezel, holds this distinctive Lake Superior agate specimen. The primary artfulness in the design is in the bail. Heavy sterling round wire contrasts the points of the shield with a circular air. It is sure to attract the envy of any other agate hunter and cause curiosity from those who are less familiar with "Lakers".
In 1969 the Lake Superior agate was designated by the Minnesota Legislature as the official state gemstone. A fantastic choice, indeed.
